Hong Kong as an Art Genre

Since 1997, Hong Kong is the only city on earth that operates “One Country, Two Systems”; this system is in fact an experiment in nature, there is no prior history nor reference to refer to, it is literally a new and experimental concept. This is not only regarding certain aspects of politics but also from daily lives to art creation, the system creates a strange and unique environment.

The exhibition “Hong Kong Experience Hong Kong Experiment” at the Hong Kong Museum of Art until 28th, March 2021, has included artworks collected for over half a decade, recording the ups and downs in Hong Kong history. The changes in the environment also change the contexts of artistic reaction, creating a special landscape.

“Hong Kong Experience Hong Kong Experiment” showcases a number of artworks with the context of Hong Kong, these include canvas work, sculptures, installation, and more works of different media. There are plenty of artworks that incorporate very local elements of Hong Kong, which gives a unique sight to different audiences into the culture of Hong Kong.

The experimental nature of Hong Kong would also affect artists’ approaches to art-making. The multi-cultural society of different cultures and populations, this friendly attitude to diversities also extends to art-making; different materials, daily life utilities, city landscape, the people, and etc, these elements can all be a part of the artworks.

In this fast-developing city, Hong Kong, there are many scenes and culture that will fade away quickly if we do not capture them right in time. Therefore, the cross timeline artworks in “Hong Kong Experience Hong Kong Experiment” can make the audiences feel like they have travelled in time, recording the lifestyles of different times. Hong Kong from a small fishing port, to a international city; sometimes, we do not have the spare time to feel or appreciate certain parts of this city, and it already fades away before we notice it; and art fills up this missing part, for us to have a second chance to appreciate this beautiful city that we might or might not have missed out.
