HKDI Design Show 2026: The Next Generation of Design Talent

From a giant magic book with projection mapping, to blind-box figures telling Hong Kong stories; from costumes inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, to 1,000 hand-painted rubber ducks — the HKDI Design Show 2026 is unfolding at the Tseung Kwan O campus, showcasing a creative revolution led by a new generation of designers.

WHY IT MATTERS

This year’s exhibition centres on three key pillars: cross-disciplinary collaboration, industry integration, and entrepreneurship. The works on display are more than graduation projects — they respond to social issues, evoke collective memories, and reveal how these young designers see the world in the AI era. HKDI‘s core academic directions — Digital Media and Future Technology, Popular Culture and Lifestyle Design, and Cultural Heritage with a Modern Twist — are all brought to life in this exhibition.

Running until 23 September, the annual exhibition brings together graduate works from HKDI’s four academic departments: Architecture, Interior and Product Design; Communication Design; Digital Media; and Fashion and Image Design. In the era of artificial intelligence, these young designers have not been replaced by technology — they have turned it into their tool: using light and projection to tell stories, Augmented Reality to preserve urban memories, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to respond to social issues.

Where Pages Meet the Shimmer

A Digital Media graduate created an immersive world in HKDI’s virtual production studio — “Where Pages Meet the Shimmer,” an installation combining projection mapping with physical sets to tell a story of a mysterious invitation and a magical adventure. Every page of the Giant Magic Book is a conversation between light and space. This is more than a graduation project — it demonstrates how students can turn cutting-edge technology into commercially viable work.

Hong Kong Building Monogatari

A Foundation Studies graduate turned Hong Kong’s iconic buildings into blind-box figures, adding a playful French Bulldog to make these miniature landmarks even more appealing. But these are more than trendy toys. Each figure comes with AR technology — scan it with your phone, and the building’s history comes to life. This “miniature history museum” passes on Hong Kong’s collective memories in a language the younger generation understands best.

Demon of Devouring Desire

A graduate of the Higher Diploma in Costume Design for Performance from the Department of Fashion and Image Design drew inspiration from the classic tale One Thousand and One Nights to create “Demon of Devouring Desire.” Featuring a dramatic palette of black and deep red, the costume combines distressed armour with flowing red tulle to visualise the concept of temptation and restraint. The work showcases the student’s comprehensive capabilities in costume design, theatrical aesthetics, and visual storytelling, highlighting its strong potential for application across the stage, film, and performing arts markets.

Budducks Flight

The Department of Communication Design brought together a cross-disciplinary team from HKDI, the Diploma of Foundation Studies (Design), Youth College, and talented alumni in partnership with Budduck, a Dutch collectable rubber duck brand. The collaboration resulted in 1,000 unique hand-painted art ducks — “Budducks Flight.”

Exploring the themes of “Hong Kong’s local culture” and “the fusion of Eastern and Western influences,” students transformed cultural symbols, folklore, and traditional motifs into distinctive collectible artworks. The Budduck team will select top-performing designs, which may eventually be put into commercial production or featured in overseas exhibitions — providing students with a direct bridge to the global industry.

Cross-disciplinary Collaboration

HKDI places strong emphasis on project-based learning and interdisciplinary thinking. This year’s exhibition invited graduates of the Higher Diploma in Design for Event, Exhibition and Performance from the Department of Architecture, Interior and Product Design to design their own department’s graduation exhibition — showing how ideas evolved through research, experimentation, refinement and collaboration.

Elsewhere, students from the Higher Diploma in Digital Fashion Branding and Buying from the Department of Fashion and Image Design partnered with Marks & Spencer to develop a pop-up retail concept. Bringing a fresh Gen Z perspective, they created a fashion brand from the ground up — from brand strategy and visual merchandising to retail operation.

A Diverse Programme of Design Showcases

HKDI continues to provide graduates with opportunities to showcase their work through a series of design events, including “The Revolutionary Image of the New Generation” and “New Fashion Force,” featuring outstanding work by graduates from the Higher Diploma programmes in Costume Design for Performance, Fashion Image Design and Fashion Design. The Film and Animation Screening and V Music Show: Rising Star also present projects by graduates from the Animation and Visual Effects, Film, Television and Photography, and Music Production programmes.
