From 1978 to the Future: The Evolution of the Metallic Soul

The Tokyo exhibition will showcase Sorayama’s very first robot painting, created in 1978 for a whisky advertisement, alongside his wide ranging explorations of robotic forms such as dinosaurs and unicorns. Highlights include the original design drawings for AIBO, the entertainment robot dog he designed for Sony, the iconic Aerosmith album cover artwork, as well as his newest sculptural works and an immersive digital installation. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience, on an impressive scale, the very essence of Sorayama’s lifelong pursuit: the expression of light, reflection and transparency.

Modern Sfumato: Redefining Perception Beyond the Canvas

Hajime Sorayama has consistently articulated his artistic vision as a pursuit of “light,” “reflection,” and “transparency” that surpass the limitations of traditional painting. As Sorayama has repeatedly stated, “To depict light, it is necessary to depict air; to depict air, it is necessary to depict transparency; the key is how to master the expression of reflection.” These words embody his relentless exploration of new forms of expression that challenge the boundaries of artistic representation. Much like Leonardo da Vinci, who developed the sfumato technique to capture atmospheric perspective, or the Impressionists, who used pointillism to express light, Sorayama continually pushes himself to create visual illusions that have never been achieved before. His work represents an extraordinary attempt to capture the unseen and explore the deepest layers of human perception.

Metal Dreams: A Symphony of Intellect, Body, and Time

Sorayama’s depictions of robots, human figures, animals, and dinosaurs offer a speculative vision of a future beyond the physical limitations of living beings. His work invites us to imagine an aesthetic future where organic life forms have merged with mechanical civilization. These creations stir our imagination, intertwining themes such as the nature of human intellect, the body, and time.

Hajime Sorayama has established himself as a legendary artist, both within Japan and internationally, for his extensive oeuvre centered on the ongoing pursuit of beauty regarding the human body and the machine. Drawing upon his initial explorations of robotic representation first presented in 1978, Sorayama’s Sexy Robot series was brought to worldwide recognition with the publication of the eponymous book in 1983. Integrating the aesthetic beauty of the female body with the context of the robot, the series has significantly influenced the development of robotic imagery. Sorayama has continued to receive high international acclaim for his many projects, such as his collaboration with The Weeknd and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton in 2023. Most recently, he held his largest retrospective to date, Light, Reflection, Transparency, at NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in Shanghai, which concluded with great success.
