INFINITE POSSIBILITIES OF PRINTMAKING COLLAGE: ASUKA IRIE’S MIXED MEDIA ART

What defines the limits of printmaking? When copperplate size becomes a creative constraint, when traditional techniques cannot carry one’s inner vision, artists seek alternative paths to redefine the boundaries of printmaking. Asuka Irie is precisely such an explorer who has pioneered entirely new expressive territories for copperplate art through her original “mixed media” technique.

When Asuka Irie was considering how to make a living as a professional printmaking artist, she realized that copperplate prints could not produce works larger than the copperplate itself. Through many trials and explorations, she developed a mixed media collage technique, thereby breaking free from size limitations and freely expressing her unique artistic vision. This innovative approach allows her to maintain work quality while achieving maximum freedom in artistic expression.

The marvel of her “mixed media” lies in printing copperplate etchings on Japanese paper, then combining them with watercolors and Chinese ink. She prints various Japanese papers of different thicknesses and textures into print fragments of diverse colors and patterns, using them as flexibly as a painter uses pigments. The color particularity of her works stems from the infinite possibilities of printmaking. Each carefully arranged collage piece builds rich visual effects that transcend flat surfaces through layers upon layers.

This technique both inherits the refined lines and tonal variations of copperplate printing while incorporating the charm of Eastern ink painting. The translucent quality of Japanese paper complements the weighty strokes of copperplate, creating dreamlike and mysterious visual worlds. Observing her works, one sees warriors and maidens juxtaposed, classical costumes merged with modern urban landscapes, flora coexisting with mechanical elements, presenting fantastical narratives that transcend time and space. Each piece silently invites viewers to enter a unique aesthetic space suspended between ancient and modern, virtual and real.
