以上是一代兒童節目《放學 ICU》主題曲的歌詞,也正好呼應了藝術家馬蒂・施內普夫題為「心像片段」的個人展覽。施內普夫以畫布作為媒介,打破空間和身體的限制,邀請觀者進入其超現實、如幻似真的夢境世界。

The above is a (translated) lyric line from the theme song of After School ICU, a children’s TV programme. It also happens to echo Vignettes, the solo exhibition of artist Marty Schnapf. Using the canvas as a medium, Schnapf breaks down the limitations of spaces and bodies, and invites viewers to enter his dreamlike world of surrealism.

「心像片段」為洛杉磯藝術家馬蒂・施內普夫首次於香港舉行之個人展覽。施內普夫融合夢境與記憶、具體與抽象,通過其作品引起觀眾內心的共鳴,並投射出一種既真誠又神秘的超現實空間。在是次展覽中,藝術家交錯利用海洋、時間等心理符號,構成一個個電影般的「心像片段」。這些片段中象徵着分解和肉體的肖像啟發自夢境及個人回憶,並與它們的環境共同浮沈融合。一幅幅閃亮的油畫呈現出波光粼粼的流動性,暗示更迭不斷的觸覺和身份。參觀者將透過畫布進入夢幻的寓言故事,探索一個閾限如詩的未知領域。

Vignettes is the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Marty Schnapf in Hong Kong. By fusing dream and memory, figuration and abstraction, Schnapf is known for his psychological resonance, which evokes an equally visceral and mythic surrealism. In this exhibition, the artist utilises psychic symbols such as the ocean and time, producing cinematic “vignettes”. Inspired by dreams and personal recollections, his fragmented and sensual figures float and merge with their environments. Glistening oils paint and recreate water under light, hinting at the ever-shifting fluidity of sensation and identity. Viewers are invited to enter the allegorical scenes behind the canvas, and explore an unknown space that is both liminal and lyrical.

  • 馬蒂・施內普夫的繪畫柔和、充滿質感、變幻莫測而超現實,彷彿游弋在兩岸之間的水域,又如心理空間一般深邃莫測。畫中人物的形體扭曲、折疊、發生折射,甚至消失;物理存在瓦解了,作品也因此飄忽於現實與超現實之間。Marty Schnapf’s paintings — textural, kaleidoscopic, and tenderly surreal — dwell in the watery space between two shores, as if plumbing the depths of the psyche. Schnapf’s painted bodies contort, fold, refract, and disappear — gestures of material dissolution that tug at the veil between the real and surreal.
  • 水作為一種古典元素,也通常是深邃的潛意識的象徵,在施內普夫的畫作中佔據重要位置。藝術家透過畫筆再現了水的起伏與幻象屬性:畫布閃爍、反光,他厚重而斑斕的筆觸描摹著這種古老液體的流動性、易變性與生命力,使水不僅成為主題與媒介,更是隱喻本身。Water, a primordial element and a symbol of the abyssal fluidities of the subconscious, features prominently in Schnapf’s paintings. These painterly renderings of water harness its undulating and illusionistic qualities: as the compositions gleam, shimmer, and reflect, his viscous and prismatic daubs of paint channel the elusive, mercurial, and life-bestowing properties of this primal liquid, anointing it as subject, material, and metaphor.
  • 除水以外,施內普夫的畫中還有不少其他象徵符號:高飛的鷹、細緻雕琢的面具、鸚鵡、電話亭、疾馳的火車、神秘的牛仔、破碎的建築、纏繞的身體,或是聖馬可廣場水中佇立的駿馬。這一套隱密的視覺語言引領我們進入一片無垠的神話世界。Schnapf’s paintings are peppered with other allegorical emblems as well: a soaring hawk, a carved mask, a company of parrots, a phone booth, a passing train, enigmatic cowboys, fractured architecture, entangled bodies, and a regal mare in a flooded St. Mark’s Square. Such a coded visual language ushers us into a boundless thicket of fabled worlds.

  • 綜觀整個系列,施內普夫所建構的「心像片段」以心理與身體為切入口,探討偶然、朦朧與不確定。他的繪畫描摹出一個個多面相的場景與人物,如同潛意識的自由流動所創造的詩情與意義;正如施內普夫所認為的:「變形與模糊,可能比清晰更美。」Taken together, Schnapf’s collected vignettes mine psychic and somatic notions of chance, mystery, and indeterminacy: his paintings assert their multiform sites and subjects as allegories for the lyrical hunt for meaning within the creative subconscious, where “distortion” — as Schnapf remarked — “can be more beautiful than clarity.”

  • 馬蒂・施內普夫是一位生於 1977 年、定居洛杉磯的藝術家。Born in 1977, Marty Schnapf is a Los Angeles-based artist.
  • 施內普夫 1999 年畢業於美國威滕伯格大學,並取得藝術文學士學位。Schnapf graduated from Wittenburg University in 1999 with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts.
  • 施內普夫曾分別於 2024 年及 2025 年經由貝洛登畫廊,兩度參與在香港舉行之巴塞爾藝術展。Through the art gallery Perrotin, Schnapf has participated in Art Basel in Hong Kong twice, in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
  • 是次展覽為施內普夫繼 2024 年在上海經貝洛登畫廊舉行「臨界點」個人展覽後,第二次來到亞洲舉行個展,展出一系列全新的作品。Following Thresholds, his solo exhibition with Perrotin in Shanghai in 2024, this is Schnapf’s second solo exhibition in Asia, which features a series of new artworks.
