Having explored urban ink painting skills and drawing inspiration from Hong Kong architecture for 30 years, Wong Chau Tung’s works focus on Victoria Harbour night views, city streets, neon signs, fireworks, and cultural celebrations, presenting the ever-changing Hong Kong through ink creations. This exhibition offers an artistic and romantic portrayal of Hong Kong’s night scenes and cultural festivals.

Why it matters:

The lights of the high-rise buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbour cast shimmering and ever-changing colours on the sea surface, ultimately transforming the harbour into a beautiful city night view, which is the pride of Hong Kong people and definitely the most impressive sight for tourists who come to Hong Kong. Wong has developed over more than thirty years – ‘urban ink painting’. Wong often chooses local buildings and landscapes as his subjects. In addition to capturing the bustling and spectacular urban scenery, he also expresses his own feelings and sentiments towards Hong Kong. He superimposes what he sees and its impressions in his subconscious, expressing his personal feelings towards Hong Kong in the virtual and real aspects of ink painting.

3 Highlights:

  • Wong Chau Tung has painstakingly studied urban ink painting, blending Eastern and Western painting methods. He first adopted Western techniques for depicting air, light, and colour, while retaining the techniques of Chinese ink painting such as dotting, splashing, breaking, and staining.

  • The composition is based on a multi-point perspective to depict the layers and multidimensional space of the city, portraying various aspects of urban landscapes, human emotions, ecology and environment of the urban era, while preserving the spirit of Chinese painting, emphasis on sentiment and value for Xieyi (freehand brushwork).

  • In addition to capturing the bustling and spectacular urban scenery, he also expresses his own feelings and sentiments towards Hong Kong. He uses light ink for gradual rendering, overlapping, and then laying colours, expressing the realm of “I paint Hong Kong” that he has comprehended. Through the blending of lines, colours, halos and ink tones in an expressive approach, he creates his urban ink paintings.

  • Wong Chau Tung created a perfect blend between Eastern and Western techniques, adopting Western Impressionist techniques to depict air, light and colour while retaining traditional Chinese bird-and-flower style ink techniques such as dotting, brushing, splashing, breaking and staining paintings. This fusion has given rise to his unique “urban ink painting style”, which embodies the characteristics of “New Ink Art,” earning him the title of “pioneer and trailblazer of urban ink painting.”
