Amidst our often chaotic and fast-paced urban lives, it’s easy to miss the finer details and deeper emotional connections that enrich our existence. However, the recent “The Gift” joint exhibition at Touch Gallery offers a rare pause, inviting us to explore the myriad interpretations of “gift” through the oil paintings of Liu Cheng Mui and Phillip Hui.

Why it matters:
The theme of “Gift” drives this compelling oil painting exhibition by esteemed artists Liu Cheng Mui and Phillip Hui. Here, ‘gift’ transcends its usual material connotations, symbolising emotional exchange and timeless connection. Liu Cheng Mui’s artistry delves into the essence of everyday interactions, highlighting the emotional depth in simple acts of giving, whether tokens between friends or silent affirmations of familial love. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on the often-overlooked joys in their daily lives.
Phillip Hui offers a contrasting yet complementary perspective. His paintings capture the vibrant urban landscapes and quieter, fading memories of Hong Kong. Through a masterful blend of reality and imagination, Hui crafts dynamic and introspective scenes, portraying the city’s energy alongside its more contemplative, forgotten corners. His use of rich, evocative colours brings out the urban environment’s unique beauty and personal nostalgia.
