3812 Gallery Hong Kong is pleased to present “We Dream for that Light”, the Hong Kong young artist Thomas Ngan’s (b. 1995) first solo exhibition in 3812. The exhibition showcases a beautiful selection of Thomas’s latest works under the core themes of Floral, Fragility of Life, and Light. Specialised in incorporating realism into a dreamy world, Thomas creates distinct realms that invite audiences to follow the light and explore infinite possibilities.

．​「我們夢見那光」的展覽主題源於藝術家對不確定性與希望的探討。藝術家試圖用細膩卻生動的筆觸以及和諧的構圖去捕捉藏在迷霧與事物之間的真相。觀眾將步入一個充滿可能性的迷霧世界，享受著「光」引導我們進入一個沐浴在恩典下的迷人花園的美好時刻。

．​對於顔耀明來説，在終末之前的生命是一連串無止盡的選擇，由迷霧籠罩的未知路徑組成。或是因他不斷變化的跨國生活經歷，周遭一切都在動蕩之中卻又充滿著無限的可能性——然而只有未知才能生出希望。這成為了顔耀明作品中的關鍵主題：他在畫布上追隨著「光」而建構一個神秘未知的世界。

．​顔耀明1995年出生於加拿大多倫多。他之後與家人回到香港，並在那度過了童年時光。他少年時期曾多次往返兩地，但成年後的大部分時間是在香港度過。顔耀明在游歷英國、法國、西班牙、美國期間參觀了二十多個城市及其博物館。其中維多利亞晚期自然主義畫家、寫實主義畫家的傑作，以及印象主義與後印象主義自然隨心卻抽象的表達方式都令顔耀明讚歎不已。親眼觀賞這些大師傑作，不但奠定了他對繪畫的理解，也為他帶來了啟發與靈感。從那時起，他的風格便與現實主義和抽象主義的二元性日益趨近。

．“We Dream for that Light” is derived from the concepts of uncertainty and hope. The artist attempts to capture the truth that lies between the fog and the motif with his vibrant brushstroke and harmonious composition. Audiences can step into a mystic world of possibility, savouring the moment when the light guides us to a fascinating garden surrounded by grace.

．For Thomas, life is an endless series of decisions until it ends, consisting of infinite paths of the unknown clouded in fog. It is probably because of his ever-changing cross-nation life experience, everything is in turbulence yet with infinite possibilities – the unknown is the necessity for hope. It becomes a key theme in Thomas’s works where he follows the “light” to construct a world of mystery.

．Thomas Ngan was born in 1995 in Toronto, Canada, and later returned to Hong Kong with his family. During Thomas’ stays in England, France, Spain, and America where he visited dozens of cities and their museums, he was astonished by the masterpieces of the naturalism painters, realism painters of the late Victorian period, as well as the spontaneous yet abstract expressions that the impressionist and post-impressionist employed. Seeing the masterworks in person confirms and grounds his understanding of paintings as well as inspiring them. His style has since then increasingly embraced the duality of both realism and abstraction.

顔耀明在多倫多的高中畢業後不久就開始教授繪畫課程。透過多年來的教學，他在自己的繪畫哲學、分析系統和技術方法上精益求精。他的作品展示了精緻的繪圖技巧，漸漸在國際藝術家群體中廣為人知，經常出現在社交媒體上的各大藝術主頁上。顔耀明的系統繪畫方法論將每件作品剖析成結構和圖形語言，視價值、顏色、邊緣、線條、紋理、運動、韻律、形式、圖式、圖案為特定要素分析與完善作品。他認為藝術家的終極目標應該是對真理的追求，而藝術家應當傳達真理、而不是阻礙其傳播。

Thomas started teaching painting classes soon after he graduated from high school in Toronto. Over the years through teaching, he refined his philosophy, analytical system, and technical approach toward painting. His works with their display of refined draftsmanship became known among international artists communities, as they were often featured on various representational art pages on social media. His systematic approach toward paintings allows the dissecting of each work into structural and graphical languages that employ values, colours, edges, lines, textures, movements, rhythms, shapes, forms, and patterns as specific perspectives into his arsenal to analyse and polish his works. However, Thomas believes that the ultimate driving force of an artist should be the pursuit of truth, draftsmanship should only be allowed to further communicate that truth, not hinder it.
