A MEDITATION ON “HOME”

Instead of a mere physical shelter, dwelling at home infers peaceful and settled emotional conditions. Local artist Leung Chi Wo ignites rhetorical mediations on recent turbulence of Hong Kong: what if ‘home’ becomes ‘non-home’, and what if ‘non-home’ calms the shattering souls?” Presented by JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power, Leung’s multimedia exhibition Home and Nonhome is held at Eaton HK from 20 November to 11 December 2020.

The concept of “home” has always been a recurring subject of reflection and creation in Leung Chi Wo’s work. Leung says, “By deliberately misplacing ‘home’ in a ‘non-home’ setting, Home and Nonhome examines the immaterial and vacillating notion of ‘home’.” Leung’s reflective practice combines historical exploration with conceptual inquiry within a contemporary cityscape. Ranging from photography and video to text and installation, his multidisciplinary work is concerned with the undetermined relationship between conception, perception and understanding, especially in relation to site and history within cultural and political frameworks.

Leung Chi Wo’s Home and Nonhome is a two-part project located at the hotel lobby and a pairs of hotel room in respectively.

Part 1 – In the hotel lobby of Eaton HK, Leung stages Monuments of Solitude II (2020), an old telephone booth that signifies a bygone way of communication between home and the sojourner. Decontextualized from its original function, the booth is equipped with a piece of petrified wood rather than a telephone, transforming it into a space of contemplation. This work was first shown at the Thailand Biennale Krabi (2018).

Part 2 – The exhibition continues in a pair of hotel rooms. Across these two installations, Leung offers a perspective across two generations from 2007 to the present and future through the evolving notion of ‘home.’The first hotel room features Leung’s project Open Home (2007), a sound-based installation with thirty recorded monologues by people talking about their homes. All recorded in Hong Kong, the work highlights both shared and collective stories experienced by the people in the city. The second hotel room presents ‘fragments’ created and inspired by the artist’s recent conversations with Hong Kong teenagers on their views of home and the future. The installation includes a video work and found objects such as vintage battle spirit cards, stuff toy and an old portrait.

Leung Chi Wo studied culture of photography at Centro di Ricerca e Archiviazione della Fotografia in Italy in 1991 and obtained a Master of Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1997. Leung is currently Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media of the City University of Hong Kong. He is also the co founder of Para Site. By using photography, words, found objects, performance and installation, Leung combines historical data collection with conceptual inquiry that invites us to question memory, power system and history’s ambivalence. Focusing on the 1967 anti colonial riots in Hong Kong, Leung continues to investigate various social, cultural and political incidents that occurred in the year. By collecting and synthesizing old found objects, texts and images from archive, Leung juxtaposes everyday events against moments of political instability.
