On October 6th, 2020, Christie’s opened 20th Century Week with a highly successful Evening Sale of 20th Century Art, live streamed from New York. From Impressionism’s opening moments to cutting-edge contemporary art, the sale tracked the major movements of the modern art canon. Its featured works reflected the experimentation of this momentous era and shaped art as we know it today. The innovative event turned out to be a huge success, achieving $340,851,500, and selling 84% by lot.
The sale presented to viewers across the world a wide array of splendid masterpieces, among which stood out Cy Twombly’s Untitled, which realized $38.7 million. It was followed by STAN, one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever found, which achieved $31.8 million, eclipsed its presale estimate of $6-8 million and set a new world auction record for any dinosaur skeleton or fossil ever sold at auction.
