白立方欣然呈現美國戰後最重要的畫家之一 —— 阿爾•赫爾德(1928 − 2005) 首次香港個展。展出作品勾勒了赫爾德近50年的藝術生涯,並重點關注其創作的現代主義根源及對抽象繪畫的持續探索。

White Cube is pleased to present an exhibition of works by American painter Al Held (1928−2005). This is Held’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Asia.

赫爾德1928年生於紐約布魯克林,他相信抽象能夠讓人超越基本感官,進而達到被他視為「以人類五感幾乎無法體會的現實」。赫爾德的作品常常被與抽象表現主義相提並論:作為比威廉•德•庫寧、傑克遜•波洛克更年輕的一代,他持續性的探索擴大了抽象繪畫的語匯。

展覽中最早的一件作品:《無題》(1956) 出自赫爾德的首個創作系列「顏料畫」。這些包羅萬象的姿態性抽象繪畫在繽紛的厚塗重彩中,既借鑒了抽象表現主義,又指出了新的方向。以將他所定義的蒙德里安的「完全客觀性」與波洛克的「完全主觀性」相結合,憑借這一開創性的系列,年輕的赫爾德獲得了國際性的認可。

A pioneer of hard-edged abstraction, Al Held created works of great complexity during his 50-year career. Split over two levels, the exhibition begins by tracing the development of Held’s oeuvre through works on paper and small-scale paintings from the 1950s to the 1980s. It culminates with a room dedicated to his quest to expand the language of abstraction, featuring a number of major paintings from his ‘Luminous Construct’ series: powerful, colourful, hard-edged geometric works inspired by the perspective and illusionism of Renaissance painting.

At White Cube Hong Kong, we are presenting a detailed visual narrative of these developments that begins with Held’s roots in Modernist Abstraction and concludes with his transformation into a post-Modern rascal who turned away from Modernist traditions.’
