THE IMAGINED CITY IN WATERCOLOUR

Fast pacing of life and stressed out are the common characteristics of Hong Kong people all the time, and the epidemic and the social distancing have definitely brought us a lot of troubles. Having said that, it is precisely because of the epidemic that we have slowed down so that we can appreciate the beauty of this city and life. Karin Weber Gallery is excited to announce the first solo exhibition by Carmen Ng from Hong Kong, titled “Flowers in the window”, as their fifth collaboration after a series of joint projects and group exhibitions, featuring watercolour to portray wonderful memories and pleasure moments in the imagined city.

Carmen Ng renders her complex, city-inspired visions in vivid and delightful detail on paper. She captures a world that can only be imagined in dreams. The artist’s meticulously rendered scenes reveal the minutiae of her subjects’ otherworldly existence — no detail or cleverly imagined situation is too small, and rendered in exact detail. In her practice, she demonstrates astonishing control of her preferred medium watercolour.

Canvas, is inspired by Ng’s childhood experience of drawing on the window glass when she was taking the bus. As Ng recalls, “when we were small, we liked to head to the upper deck when we got on the bus. We were desperate to get the front row seats and excited by the view outside the bus windows. When the weather was bad, condensation turned the windows into canvases. Our fingers were our paint brushes. We made our very first picture and had fun playing noughts and crosses”

Our lives have changed drastically since last year due to the epidemic, and for many people, we are even in dire straits. However, our source of happiness has also become much simpler at the same time, in which we are already grateful for a proper dine out at night and a nature trip. Ng’s artworks are combination of stories, reality and imagination and share with us the belief that even simple things are remarkable for us to leave profound and wonderful memories, through the city-inspired dreams she portrayed.
