Presented by David Zwirner, the group exhibition “Brilliant City” borrows its title from the lyrics in the Cantopop electro duo Tai Ming Pair’s classic song “Starry Night”. The exhibition reveals the reality under neon nights of several brilliant cities and explores how the rapid development produces social problems and a sense of loss.
“Brilliant City” features artwork contributed by 7 artists, including Francis Alÿs, Chen Wei, Stan Douglas, Li Qing, Michael Lin, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Ming Wong. They all come from different metropolis – Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Paris, New York and Mexico City. Covering from themes of contradictory identities, economic development to history and everyday life, their artworks explore how they engage with the urban space and social issues through different forms of art. For instance, Li Qing’s “Neighbor’s Window” series combine oil painting and collages while Chan Wei’s photography series mimic urban places to depict urban absurdities. The exhibition also showcases the classic artworks by Gordon Matta-Clark, in which he documents how he subverted the urban architecture by cutting the properties and sawing different shapes of holes. Through blurring the line between absurdity and reality, the artists express how they re-imagine the so-called prosperous and brilliant cities they live in.
